Job Description

As a Carpenter Assistant, you will be part of the Trades team that maintains College buildings, providing a clean, well-functioning, comfortable, and safe environment for all campus members. 

Tasks can include: moving furniture, repairing furniture, fixtures, walls, and window screens, painting, cleaning, and assisting the locksmith with recores and key assignments. Each day is different, and work will be assigned by the full-time Trades staff. Students with previous experience in this position may get the opportunity to train new student staff.

Skills Acquired or Developed:

As a Carpenter Assistant, you will get experience working independently as well as in a team. Skills learned range from repair and care of furniture and fixtures, to teamwork and creative problem solving. You will also become familiar with campus: where things are, how they work, and which team can make them happen. Every day brings the opportunity to try something new.

Job Requirements:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and willingness to drive a golf cart. Training provided.
  • Able to to lift/carry objects and furniture, at least 25 pounds, repeatedly.
  • Able to do physical work for extended periods of time.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and their proper and safe use.
  • Able to work in non-climate-controlled environments.
  • Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
  • Punctuality and dependability.
  • Curiosity about campus.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Employees are expected to work in a safe manner and follow applicable safe work practices.

This is an in-person position with shifts available M-F between 6am-4:30pm. Student staff set their schedule with the Trades supervisor at the beginning of each semester. Priority given to students with work study award as part of their financial aid package.

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
