Job Description

Physics Help Center Tutors

The Physics and Astronomy Department is seeking STEM Tutors to assist students enrolled in PHYS-126 and PHYS127 (Introductory Physics I and II), and PHYS-226 and PHYS-227 (Principles of Physics I and II) during the 2025-2026 Academic Year. 

Physics Help Center Tutor duties/responsibilities include:

  • Providing tutoring services to students in our 100/200 level physics courses, primarily with questions about homework problems, but also assisting with general problem solving skills, test prep, or questions regarding lab assignments, as needed. 
  • Track student attendance and usage of tutoring services. 
  • Monitor evening use of the lab classrooms in OLRI 152 and 154.
Job Requirements

 

  • Applicants must have completed (at a minimum) both PHYS 226 and PHYS 227 (or equivalent coursework elsewhere), and should be comfortable with the subject matter of the courses above. (Special consideration will be given to those having completed PHYS 331 or higher coursework.)
  • Must be available to work Sunday-Thursday evenings (7:00-10:00 p.m., during normal Physics Tutoring Center hours). Hours per week assigned will depend on your availability.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and trustworthy; able to work well with individuals or groups.
  • Verbal communication (or “people skills") and additional coursework in physics and mathematics are a plus.
  • All Tutors will be required to attend a tutor training session being offered by the MAX Center (date TBA). This training will cover DEI and STEM specific ttutoring practices and protocols. Attending ongoing training sessions offered by the MAX Center is strongly recommended. This training will cover additonal STEM specific tutoring practice and protocols.

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid.
