Job Description

MUST be available to work Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings or afternoons.

This position requires one to assist in the day-to-day operations of the chemical stockroom. Please submit resume or email with year in school, major or potential major, any work references on campus and your availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Lab days in the science building are primarily Tuesdays and Thursdays. Individual research labs operate throughout the week. Attention to detail is an important requirement of the job.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and/or special skills necessary to perform the duties of the position:

  1. Must be able to work Tuesday and/or Thursday. These are lab days and must be covered before any MWF hours.
  2. Employee is responsible for covering assigned shift or making prior arrangements for absence.
  3. Attention to detail is necessary for locating chemicals and using the computer database.
  4. Prefer science major (or high school chemistry experience) with a really good imagination for describing chemical glassware shapes.
  5. Prefer student with “customer service” attitude.

Job functions and/or special projects:

  1. Assist students/staff/faculty in checking out glassware and chemicals according to set procedure.
  2. Maintain chemical database, add or deplete items as necessary.
  3. Work with other student employees (team work) on large project usually surrounding compliance or chemical storage.
  4. Check-in or check-out chemicals and re-shelve chemicals as if running a library.
  5. Wash returned glassware in washer, prepare empty chemical bottles for proper disposal or re-use.

Skills acquired or developed on the job:

  1. Attention to detail and typing skills will improve.
  2. Organization skills will be sharpened.
  3. Communication with peers and faculty will become comfortable (regardless of shyness since everyone in this department is user-friendly).
  4. Stockroom work will expose student to future employment opportunities as a TA or research assistant.
  5. Computer skills with inventory database-Vertere Chemical Inventory.
  6. Chemistry or Biology students will benefit most by picking up on chemical functions, jargon, proper compliance that will carry them into “the real world”.
