Qualifications and/or special skills necessary to perform the duties of the position: - Must be able to work Monday - Friday during the summer.
- Employee is responsible for covering assigned shift or making prior arrangements for absence.
- Attention to detail is necessary for locating chemicals and using the computer database.
- Prefer science major or experienced work study student with a really good imagination for describing chemical glassware shapes.
- Prefer student with “customer service” attitude.
Job functions and/or special projects: - Assist students/staff/faculty in checking out glassware and chemicals according to set procedure.
- Maintain chemical database, add or deplete items as necessary.
- Work with other student employees (team work) on large project usually surrounding compliance or chemical storage.
- Check-in or check-out chemicals and re-shelve chemicals as if running a library.
- Wash returned glassware in washer, prepare empty chemical bottles for proper disposal.
Skills acquired or developed on the job: - Attention to detail and typing skills will improve.
- Organization skills will be sharpened.
- Communication with peers and faculty will become comfortable (regardless of shyness since everyone in this department is user-friendly).
- Stockroom work will expose student to future employment opportunities as a TA or research assistant.
- Computer skills with inventory database-FileMaker Pro.
- Chemistry or Biology students will benefit most by picking up on chemical functions, jargon, proper compliance that will carry them into “the real world”.
