Job Description

The Digital Resource Center is an on-campus technology lab with specialized scanning, printing, and AV equipment, such as a color printer, large format printer, 3D printers, flatbed scanners, book scanner, 3D scanners, and cameras in addition to standard lab iMac computers. The DRC also supports specialized software for audio and video editing (iMovie, Garageband, Premiere, etc), digitization, photo editing, and 3D modeling. We also support the technical side of the Idea Lab in collaboration with Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the DeWitt Wallace Library, and support the Interdisciplinary Media Lab in conjunction with the Media and Cultural Studies Department.

Student managers are responsible for student worker training in the DRC, developed in collaboration with the DRC Manager. In addition to training in any software or equipment they will be supporting or maintaining, they also train in technical instruction and leading workshops. Student managers are also responsible for large format poster printing for the campus, and for overseeing 3D printing and digitization. Student managers are a first point of contact for DRC Assistant questions and often perform on-the-job training for DRC assistants. Managers are also responsible for helping to catalog items in TechCheckout, our equipment tracking system, and for helping to inventory equipment. 

Applicants should have at least a year’s experience in the Digital Resource Center, and should be generally comfortable with technology and have an interest in teaching and learning. Student managers are expected to be reliable and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Typical duties performed by DRC Managers include:

  • Assisting students, staff, and faculty with questions about hardware and software in the DRC;
  • Cataloging equipment in our equipment booking and inventory system, TechCheckout;
  • Leading formal student worker trainings for DRC Assistants as part of the weekly working schedule and completing training assignments in a timely manner;
  • Providing mentoring and on-the-job training to DRC Assistants;
  • Checking equipment out to patrons, and checking in returned equipment, including examining it for damages and missing components;
  • Overseeing basic lab maintenance in the Digital Resource Center and the Idea Lab computer lab;
  • Reporting issues to full time ITS staff in a timely manner;
  • Monitoring and helping to address questions for the Digital Resource Center in the ITS ticketing queue;
  • Overseeing the large format poster printing queue and printing large format posters;
  • Overseeing the digitization queue and digitizing media to more accessible formats (VHS to digital files, for instance);
  • Overseeing the 3D Printing queue and 3D printing requested items;
  • Assisting with or hosting low-stakes technology workshops for students in the DRC, IML, and Idea Lab;
  • Completing readings and online trainings in a timely manner;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Communicate Effectively (through in person, email, and phone interactions with students, faculty, and staff, through assisting with and hosting workshops for Macalester community members

 

Job Requirements
  • At least one year’s experience working in the DRC.
  • Very strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow directions, manage time effectively, and arrive to work on time.
  • Experience and competency using Mac and/or PC computers.
  • Interest in or experience with technology, media studies, or the fine arts.
  • Self motivated and ability to work without direction.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with a variety of common productivity (Microsoft Office and the Google Suite) and utility software preferred.
  • Customer service, teaching or other previous job experience is encouraged.
