Job Description

A GIS Lab Assistant staffs the GIS Lab during assigned times throughout the week. The following is a list of typical duties performed by a GIS Lab Assistant:

1. Working through all lecture exercises and lab assignments that will be taught during semester.

2. Reading all materials assigned during the semester.

3. Supervising assigned laboratory periods during both day and evening.

4. Assisting students with questions about assignments and projects.

5. Responsible for printing student map assignments.

6. Preparing materials before class for use in lab, e.g. display, maps, GPS units, etc.

7. Responsible for straightening up lab (e.g. chairs, etc.) and locking up room at the end of the day.

8. Completing GIS and mapping projects for Macalester faculty and outside community organizations.

Job Requirements

NO EXCEPTIONS can be made to ANY of the following requirements:

1. Completed Geog 225: Introduction to GIS

2. Able to assist introductory and advanced GIS students with laboratory procedures.

3. Able to use specific computer mapping software (ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online) and able to adapt to new versions of the software and extensions as they become available.

4. Have a strong understanding of good map design and data analysis for mapping.

5. Able to use Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and Google Suite Products.

6. Work well with minimal supervision.
