Job Description

Level 1 Science tutors assist students enrolled in 100-level science courses, and must be comfortable tutoring for CHEM 111/112 - General Chemistry I and II. They participate in 2-3 science tutor meetings each month and complete the tutor training program. Science tutors work with students one-to-one or in groups. Tutor training and practice will enhance the tutor’s communication skills and their critical thinking skills in science specific disciplines.

Science tutors are present for in-person work shifts throughout the week during operating hours: Monday - Friday, 9a-4:30p, and Sunday - Thursday evenings, 7-10p.

Tutors set their own schedule during these times, typically for shifts lasting 2 - 3 hours, totaling no more than 8 - 9 hours/week. The minimum that Science tutors can work is 4 hours/week, and many of our tutors split their work shifts with other Science departments. Tutors must work at least one evening shift during the week. The hourly pay rate is $15.97. 2-3 hours/month of paid work time is reserved for our tutor training meetings, Tuesdays at noon, where we discuss various aspects of the job and conduct professional development. Regular attendance at this meeting is mandatory, along with attendance at the beginning-of-year tutor orientation on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
