Time & Location MAX Center writing tutors are present for in-person work shifts throughout the week during the MAX Center's operating hours of Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sunday - Thursday evenings, 7 - 10 p.m. Tutors set their own schedule during these times, typically for shifts lasting 2 - 3 hours totaling no more than 8 - 9 hours/week. Tutors who want to split their work between the MAX Center and another campus job may do so, provided their combined weekly total hours don't exceed 9-10 hrs. The hourly pay rate is $15. Once hired, tutors can work for the remainder of their time at Macalester; even if tutors spend a semester abroad or precept for a class, the position is held for them should they wish to return. Training & Professional Development One hour of paid work time is reserved for our weekly tutor meeting, every Tuesday at noon, where we discuss various aspects of the job and conduct professional development. We incorporate role-playing, group work, guest presentations, peer mentorship, and discussion of pedagogical literature into our professional development. Time will be allotted during your shifts to complete readings for our professional development purposes. You will never be asked to complete professional development without compensation. Regular attendance at this meeting is mandatory, along with attendance at the beginning-of-year tutor orientation on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Tutoring Logistics & Philosophy Your daily tutoring work mainly involves one-on-one sessions with student clients, conducted mostly in-person but occasionally over Zoom. Most sessions are scheduled in advance but drop-ins occasionally happen. Students occasionally provide drafts of their writing before the appointment that you can read as time permits, but reading the text ahead of time is neither mandatory nor a prerequisite for providing excellent support. Rather than performing extensive editing or proofreading on client papers, tutors are trained to follow a collaborative model of discussion and negotiation with the client about their writing. We attempt to foster an environment of non-directive, student-led writing support. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes and can involve all types of writing, including course assignments, creative writing, and applications for jobs and grad school. |
