Job Description

Lab Assistant/Preceptor for Modern Physics (PHYS 331) Lab in Fall 2025

The Physics and Astronomy department seeks a Lab Assistant for our Modern Physics courses this fall semester. One of these Lab Assistants will be needed for rotation lab experiments only, and will start work after Fall Break.

  • Assist with set-up, testing, and take-down of lab equipment for the labs.
  • Each lab station must be checked to ensure that equipment is working properly, and that the lab classroom is ready to go before the first lab section meets each week.
  • Assist with Lab Instruction during lab periods as needed. (Any Lab Assistant who helps with in-class instruction, office hours or tutoring will be required to attend a special STEM Tutor Training session offered by the MAX Center, which will cover DEI and STEM specific tutor practices and protocols. Attending additional training sessions offered by the MAX Center is strongly recommended.
  • Any problems need to be reported to the instructor as soon as possible.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed, including grading homework problems, or shopping for and inventory of equipment and supplies.

Job Requirements:

  1. Qualified applicants must have previously completed the course that you wish to be a lab assistant for (in this case, PHYS-331).  
  2. Additional lab coursework and/or Physics/ES research lab experience is greatly preferred.
  3. Applicants ideally must be available to work during one the following scheduled PHYS-331 lab times: Thursday mornings 8:00-11:10 or Thursday afternoons 1:20-4:30.

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid.
