Gallery Monitors (GMs) are vital to the day-to-day operations of the Law Warschaw Gallery. This role is ideal for students interested in visual art, museums, galleries, or arts programming. GMs are the welcoming face of the gallery—greeting visitors, answering questions, and helping create a warm, informed, and inclusive space. They also provide visitor oversight in the gallery, to ensure artworks are protected from accidents. You’ll gain hands-on experience in gallery protocols, public engagement, and event support in a dynamic campus arts environment.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome all visitors to the gallery
  • Learn the exhibitions by participating in walkthroughs, and through videos and reading material
  • Offer information about current exhibitions and artists, and respond to visitor questions thoughtfully
  • Monitor the space to ensure the safety of artworks, staff, and visitors
  • Complete exhibition-specific duties as directed
  • Complete opening and closing duties, including light cleaning (dusting, sweeping, tidying areas)
  • Distribute exhibition posters and promotional materials across campus

  • Staff the gallery during extended hours, for JWall performances and related events
  • Occasionally host visitor hours during academic breaks (optional and at the discretion of Everhart)

Hiring:

  • GAs are hired on a semester basis. Fall hires may extend into spring following a mid-semester check-in and at the discretion of Everhart.

  • All hires are subject to the Student Employment Policies: www.macalester.edu/student-employment/student-employee-handbook/

Personal:

  • Food is not permitted in the gallery, except during training sessions or exhibition turnover. Please plan meals outside of your scheduled hours.

  • Students with disabilities are welcome! Upon hire—while not required—please consider communicating with Everhart to your comfort level, in order to enure your needs are understood.

Students are required to request coverage for upcoming missed shifts through the Chat Group, as well as communicate via email with the director regarding any scheduling issues/changes.
