Job Description

Position Description: Resident Assistant (RA) - RETURNING RA & SRA APPLICANTS
 

Purpose: The Resident Assistant (RA) is a part-time, student staff member in the Department of Residential Life. The RA is a critical partner in fostering student learning and growth through mentorship and relationship building. RAs lead with compassion as they help maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive living environment for residential students. RAs use a variety of strategies to encourage student learning through intentional conversations (Scot Talks), bulletin boards, Macalester events, and community meetings.
 

Residential Life incorporates an intentional and scaffolded student-learning format called LIFE@MAC. Resident Assistants utilize the LIFE@MAC framework as one method for focusing and organizing their efforts toward helping students better understand themselves and their role within the community around them. This position reports directly to a Residence Hall Director (RHD). 
 

Responsibilities include:

  • Fostering student learning and identity development tied to the mission of Macalester College through the implementation of LIFE@MAC

  • Encouraging floor, area, and campus community development through relationship building, events, informal activities, community meals, and community meetings (community circles)

  • Connecting with residents around various topics through various means, including but not limited to intentional conversations (Scot Talks)

  • Creating and maintaining a building environment that promotes learning, development, and community (bulletin boards, community and door decorations, etc.)

  • Serving as a role model for residents by supporting and adhering to campus, state, and federal policies, providing feedback, addressing community standard violations, and engaging in conflict mediation 

  • Assisting students and staff in managing crises and referring students to appropriate college resources

  • Participating in Residential Life training, including August and January Training (prior to start of term), as well as ongoing monthly development.(Specific dates included in Dates of Service and updated in RA contract signed at hiring)

  • Regularly meeting with RHD (30 minutes - 1 hour/week) and area team (1.5 hours/week)    

  • Assisting with department-wide initiatives including, but not limited to, Housing Selection, new staff selection, student staff training, campus-wide events, professional staff search and departmental committees

  • Serving in the on-call rotation with other staff members including evenings, weekend, and break coverage (additional compensation provided during winter break and J-Term periods when the college is closed)

  • Supporting opening and closing of residence halls 

  • Staffing hall office during times of needed coverage

  • Performing additional duties as assigned by RHD

  • Living Learning Community RAs- Attend monthly LLC working group meetings 

  • Living Learning Community RAs- Collaborate with LLC Peer Mentor and faculty/staff partners to implement theme-specific events and programming

  • Returning RAs- Supporting peers through sharing experience, insights, and team mentorship between new and returning RAs
     

Compensation:

All RAs are compensated for housing (most will be in a single space, while some facilities require a roommate in a double space), which is non-taxable. Additionally, all RAs receive a stipend as part of their work on-campus with the amounts varying by experience and level, which is paid out in biweekly installments. The amounts are as follows:

  • New RAs receive a $1000 stipend 

  • Returning RAs receive a $1200 stipend

  • Living Learning Community RAs receive a $1400 stipend

  • Senior RAs receive a $1400 stipend

All RAs are eligible to receive a $250 stipend for attending the entirety of August training. 
 

Meal plans are not included in RA compensation packages. 

 
Job Requirements

Requirements:

Strong applicants are caring and supportive critical thinkers who are growth-oriented and strive to positively impact the community they serve. 
 

Additional requirements include:  

  • Maintaining full-time student status for the duration of employment

  • Possessing a grade point average of 2.7 or above at the time of application 

  • Previous experience living in the residence halls 

  • Remaining in good conduct standing with the college 

  • Consulting with their supervisor in Residential Life regarding expectations and balancing additional student employment position (maximum of 5 hours per week outside of the RA position)

Please note that:

  • Resident Assistants are not able to serve in both the Orientation Leader and RA role

  • Bonner Scholars are not eligible for the RA position due to their additional responsibilities

  • Resident Assistants may not serve as Resident Services Assistants (RSAs) simultaneously due to time commitments

     

Dates of Service: 
 

Specific dates will be sent via email after applying with information about scheduling an interview.

I have read and understand the list below of important dates and understand these dates are not negotiable. I agree to be on-campus for:

  • Required informational gathering for RA staff. Here, we will introduce what you can expect for move-in and training. This is a required event- RSVP to the calendar event when emailed.

  • Live in assigned residence hall room for the entire academic year, including training and hall closing. 

  • Present for all of in-person RA training in August and January prior to start of term (concerns should be addressed with supervisor prior to May)

  • Assist in Hall Opening in August 

  • Participate in and stay for halls closings in December and May

  • Present for 2 in-person continuous trainings over the lunch period per semester 

  • RA Banquet in May

  • Serve as part of the on-call rotation approximately once a week, including weekends and break periods. Duty during Winter and January break periods are paid extra. Dates for on-call responsibilities will be based on staff scheduling after hiring and is subject to change.

***Dates above are subject to change and would be communicated to RAs and SRAs as needed.

Break Periods:

RA on call dates: During Winter Break and J-Term we will need RA coverage in each area. During fall RA training, our professional staff will be scheduling duty with their teams that will include Winter Break and J-Term duty coverage. Each area will need an RA on call each day. Exact dates will be determined later in the year. Traditional spring semester duty will resume in January. Specific dates for these break periods will be outlined in the job contract but any questions can be directed to the Residential Life Hiring email (rlstudenthiring@macalester.edu).
 

Compensation: RAs who serve on duty will receive a $50 per day stipend. There is no limit on the number of days an RA can be on duty during Winter Break and J-Term. 

 

Additional Employment outside of Residential Life:

In addition to their role as an RA, students are able to concurrently hold a student employment position and earn up to $2000 for the academic year. This equates to roughly 5 hours of work a week, and follows Macalester’s Student Employment guidelines, which allow students to work up to but not more than 20 hours per week (15 hours as an RA plus 5 additional hours in another position).
 

* Note: International students on F-1 Visas are prohibited from working more than 20 hours per week during the academic year. The total hours for all jobs combined cannot equal more than 20 hours in any given week. The RA position requires, on average, 15 hours per week. This regulation applies to each individual week of the semester, not an average of several weeks. Any week in which the student exceeds a total of 20 hours of work is a violation of their visa regulations which puts an international student’s F-1 student status in jeopardy.
