Job Description

Job Description & Duties:

The Office of Institutional Research & Assessment at Macalester (IR&A) collaborates with campus partners to provide actionable feedback for improving educational and working experiences at Macalester, e.g. understanding student and faculty experiences, evaluating progress toward strategic goals, aiding institutional decision-making, creating state and federal accountability reports, and assisting other departments in meeting their informational needs.

This summer (please see the summer posting) and during the 2025-26 academic year, the Research Assistant will primarily work on the Classroom Community and Connectedness project, designed to contribute to more supportive learning environments at Macalester and beyond. The Research Assistant will collaborate with their supervisor and a research team comprised of faculty and staff in the entire research process, e.g.: conduct a literature review; make adjustments to the existing data collection methods; prepare an IRB application; prepare materials for classroom visits; co-facilitate classroom visits; analyze qualitative and quantitative data; communicate key findings through an infographic; use findings to create toolkits for faculty and students; and document the project, findings, and implications in an article for publication. The Research Assistant can expect a relatively high degree of autonomy as they contribute to the project. In addition, the Research Assistant may work on other IR&A projects as time allows.

 

Academic Year 2026 – 2027 Work Schedule:

8 10 hours per week from September 8, 2026 – May 8, 2027, when classes are in session (i.e., 28 weeks). A relatively consistent weekly schedule is expected; however, there is some flexibility.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  1. Coursework in qualitative and/or quantitative methods (e.g. Research Methods for Education, Empirical Research Methods, Research in Psychology, Social Science Inquiry, Statistical Research Methods in Geography, Qualitative Research Methods in Geography).
  2. A strong desire to further develop and use qualitative and quantitative research and analysis skills.
  3. Commitment to ethical research practices and working responsibly with data
  4. Commitment to data accuracy and attention to detail
  5. Ability to collaborate effectively in a small research team, and to carry out autonomous work.
  6. Strong written communication skills.
  7. Some experience communicating research methods and findings to general audiences
  8. Willingness to engage in all aspects of the work, which may also include tasks such as data entry, data cleaning, proofing, preparing materials, etc.
