French and Francophone Studies Student Program Assistant Job Opportunity for 2025/26

 

The Department of French and Francophone Studies is looking for a Student Program Assistant for the French House for the 2025/26 academic year.  

 

The Student Program Assistant resides in the French House and is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the house, including fostering a positive atmosphere, as well as engaging in and encouraging conversation in French among all residents. The Student Program Assistant works with and reports to the French House Faculty Liaison.

 

The Student Program Assistant will:

 

? communicate with the house residents in French

? assist them with language proficiency

? organize one weekly communal meal (shopping, cooking, and cleaning responsibilities are to be shared among all residents and the Student Program Assistant).

? coordinate monthly (or more frequent) events or programs that further enhance the opportunity for the residents to learn about the culture and speak French, such as game events and French film screenings for the residents. (optional)

? publicize the French House activities and the house itself to the community of French learners and beyond by posting the French House residents’ self-introductions and the photos of the French House activities on the department’s bulletin board.

? monitor communal life in the house, make a point of becoming aware of any problems that may arise, and work with the departmental faculty liaison and/or with Residential Life to address any pertinent issues that cannot be resolved independently.

? report on the management of the house and on cultural activities to the department, including a semester report.

 

The SPA and all residents of the house are responsible for maintaining a clean and livable house, conducive to a healthy learning environment. The PA and the residents should collaboratively compose a list of house tasks and distribute the labor among themselves.

 

Residential Life will provide an initial orientation on house management to the Student Program Assistant and the office will be available for assistance if there are behavioral problems or interpersonal conflicts in the house.

 

The Faculty Liaison will supervise the French House Student Program Assistant and provide programming advice as needed.

 

The Student Program Assistant is selected in cooperation by the faculty and the coordinator of the department of French and Francophone Studies.

The candidates must:

 

·       maintain full time student status for the duration of employment.

·       possess a grade point average of 3.0 or above at the time of application.

·       be in good standing with the college (not on academic or disciplinary probation).

 

Preferences will be given to students who are:

 

·       a native or near native speaker of French

·       upper-class student

·       be engaged with the French department in some form

  

Selected candidates must also receive clearance through an enhanced criminal background check due to association with student residence housing; the selected student will also undergo a campus-based Title IX and Bias Incident check.
