Job Description

Political Science Department Office Assistant tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Act as the face of the department; interact politely, warmly and knowledgeably with walk-in visitors
  • Assist professors as needed (e.g. scanning documents, creating PDFs, proofing bibliographies).
  • Help design departmental bulletin board and flyers for department sponsored events
  • Make deliveries on campus (e.g. to/from the Library or Document Services)
  • Promote departmental events and off campus opportunities in our biweekly newsletter and social media pages.
  • Generate ideas and help implement Political Science community building and social events such as Trivia Night.
  • Assist with preparation for special events, e.g., department sponsored seminars and department gatherings.
  • Type letters, documents, spreadsheets, reports, labels as directed, using appropriate computer applications.
  • Assist with webpage updates
  • Perform general housekeeping tasks in the office area, such as making coffee, washing dishes, and keeping office clean.

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Work study is required for this position. 
  • Seeking students with an interest in working in an office setting 
  • A strong ability to collaborate with and communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Ability to use computer and software programs of Microsoft such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as Google Suite
  • Knowledge on basic use of Canva, Photoshop, and Adobe Professional is preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures: typing, copying, correspondence, scanning etc.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Personal courtesy in meeting and greeting visitors; mature demeanor appropriate to an office setting
  • Interest in majoring or minoring Political Science strongly recommended but not required
  • Work hours should be scheduled from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Occasional (on average, once per month) work opportunity after 4:30 p.m. for department sponsored events is needed. 

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, with interviews scheduled beginning on August 13th.  Applications should be submitted by August 11th to receive first consideration.

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
