Job Description

The Office of Student Leadership & Engagement (OSLE) seeks to hire three Leadership Assistants (LAs) to support the development of new leadership programs and office initiatives identified through our 2020/2021 student leadership campus needs assessment project. The projects LAs produce will make a meaningful impact on the college and help support the leadership development needs of the Macalester student body. Students interested in student leadership development, creative problem solving, program/event development, change management, and project management will be successful candidates for this role.

LAs will work with Coordinator of Leadership & Transition, Margaret Smith, to select at least one project that aligns with the student employee’s skills, interests, and learning goals. Students will work independently and collaboratively with OSLE staff, co-creating and implementing their project from start to finish. LAs will also engage in weekly one-on-one coaching meetings (during college business hours) with OSLE staff where they will do progress check-ins and explore their personal leadership development. LAs will also meet together periodically to share project updates, provide mutual support, and provide insights to OSLE staff. LAs will also assist OSLE staff in staffing leadership events and trainings and other short-term tasks assigned periodically.

Potential projects include but are not limited to:

  • Build and facilitate leadership development workshops and curricula  

  • Conceptualize and execute events and/or campaigns to demystify leadership in creative ways

  • Establish an online centralized directory or hub for campus-wide student leadership opportunities

  • Organize leadership and involvement exploratory fairs 

  • Explore and implement alternative avenues for student leadership recognition 

  • Design a new leadership cohort-based program 

  • Build asynchronous leadership learning opportunities in Presence

  • Ability to meet twice a semester with other LAs

  • Applicants must be in good standing with the Office of Student Affairs and Office of Title IX & Nondiscrimination. Good standing to serve as an LA is defined as: the applicant must not be or have been on any level of probation within the past academic year and not actively on any level of probation at the time of hire.
