Job Description

Student Security Dispatchers will staff a phone which receives all incoming Public Safety and Facilities Service calls. They are student leaders who are integral in ensuring that all calls for Public Safety and Facilities are answered and responded to quickly and accurately. The student dispatcher may also take calls routed from the campus switchboard. The Student Security Dispatcher will work from the dispatch office in the Campus Center. 

Responsibilities:

  • Answer calls coming to Public Safety and Facilities Services, and re-routed Switchboard calls on evenings and weekends.
  • Receive appropriate training to be able to question callers and determine the specific nature of their calls.
  • Provide a triage or priority ranking for calls/requests.
  • Direct callers to other campus staff as appropriate.
  • Be connected to security officers via two-way radio, and be responsible for informing officers of the need for service.
  • Call in back up in the event of significant emergencies or multiple high level calls.
  • Provide logistical coordination during emergencies.
  • Provide limited back up office support for staff during off peak times.
  • Coordinate emergency event information and troubleshoot problems that may arise with staffing, facility use or event participants and notify the proper staff of concerns.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Student Security Dispatcher Meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Typing, copying, filing.
  • Collecting and sorting mail.
  • Helpig with processing key requests.
  • Logging work orders
  • Projects as assigned. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Able to work days, evenings, weekends, and at least one Friday AND one Saturday evening 10pm-2am shift each semester (Fall Break, Thanksgiving, J-Term, MLK weekend, Spring Break or Easter). Must be available to work through finals week fall semester and through Commencement spring semester.
  • Familiar with campus – its buildings, staff, services and resources.
  • Excellent customer service skills, both in person and over the phone or two-way radio.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Able to stay calm in high stress situations.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Able to process detailed information quickly.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Reliable and responsible.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Possess basic computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft office programs.
  • Ability to learn and troubleshoot specialty computer programs.

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid.
