Job Description

Student Staff members are ambassadors of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. 

  • May be recommended by professors for excellent Portuguese skills
  • Tutor students of Portuguese, from PORT 111 and above, in speaking, reading, and listening skills
  • Hold 20-minutes conversation sessions with students when requested by the professor
  • Receive student, faculty, and staff visitors in a professional and welcoming manner
  • Provide an inclusive, mindful, welcoming and open work environment
  • Be on time and present for regularly scheduled office hours
  • Keep tutoring area clean and neat
  • Help with digitizing and other technology-related projects
  • Run errands and make photocopies for the department coordinator and perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements

Qualified candidates must demonstrate Portuguese language ability by passing PORT 341 (or an equivalent class) with a grade of B or better, testing out of Portuguese via Macalester's language placement exam, or speaking Portuguese fluently as a heritage or native speaker

  • Preferred candidates are sophomores, juniors or seniors
  • First Years candidates should have experiences in Portuguese speaking countries or experiences in teaching or tutoring in other settings (i.e. study abroad, language spoken at home (heritage speaker), community work or volunteering, summer camps, etc.)
  • Selected Tutors will need to attend the Department’s Orientation meetings that take place twice a year, in fall and spring
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

  • Writing/editing ability
  • Willingness to learn and accept responsibility

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
