Job Description

The Arabic House Program Assistant resides in the Arabic House, and is a resource for the Arabic language students. The Program Assistant will assist Arabic language students who reside in the Arabic house with language proficiency, by speaking Arabic and coordinating events or programs that further enhance the opportunity for students to speak Arabic and learn about Arabic culture.

The program assistant will minimally:

  • Conduct Arabic Table bi-weekly (for Arabic students)
  • Organize an activity or event twice per semester that promotes Arabic culture and language across the broader Macalester community
  • Lead a desginated weekly time for residents during which only Arabic will be spoken (for example, through shared meals, office hours, etc.)

While this position plays a role in the learning of Arabic culture and language, it is not within the scope of this role to lead or participate in classroom teaching, grading, student advising or formal tutoring related to academic expectations.

Additionally, the program assistant, and all residents of the house, are responsible for maintaining a clean and livable house, conducive to a healthy learning environment.

Job Requirements

The Arabic House Program Assistant position is a part time, student employee of the Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Department and works closely with the Arabic language professor. This position reports to the Arabic Professor and the Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Department Coordinator.

 
The ideal candidate must:

  • maintain full time student status for the duration of employment
  • possess a grade point average of 2.7 or above at the time of application
  • be a native speaker of Arabic and be in good standing with the college (not on academic or disciplinary probation)
  • strong communication skills, timeliness in responding to department faculty and coordinator
