Job Description

Career Fellows serve as trained peer mentors, supporting Macalester students and alumni as they develop resumes and cover letters, prepare for interviews, and navigate other elements of the internship and job search process. Fellows also collaborate on outreach efforts and projects that enhance the visibility and accessibility of Career Exploration’s programs and resources.This paid student leadership position is a great opportunity to build your communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and mentorship skills, while supporting the career development of your peers and engaging in your own professional growth.

 

Core responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support by reviewing resumes and cover letters via email and during scheduled and drop-in 1-on-1 appointments. Offer clear, constructive feedback grounded in Career Exploration’s guidance and best practices.

  • Conduct mock interviews with students and provide verbal feedback on their performance to help them prepare with confidence.

  • Collaborate with fellows cohort and professional staff to plan and lead events, classroom visits, and tabling initiatives that promote Career Exploration resources and services.

  • Assist with projects and resource development that support students in their internship, job, and graduate school searches—including research, data collection, and content creation.

  • Participate in bi-weekly training and team meetings, and contribute to a supportive, inclusive team environment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Job requirements:

  • We are required to prioritize applicants who receive financial aid through the work-study program; once all qualified work-study candidates have accepted positions, we will consider non-work-study applicants for any remaining open positions.

  • Availability to work a recurring weekly schedule during office hours (M-F 8:00am-6:00pm) including bi-weekly meetings (typically Tuesdays from noon-1pm), with occasional additional shifts for events outside of office hours. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and responsive follow-through. Ability to adapt communication style to create a positive and welcoming environment for all members of our diverse community.

  • Strong attention to detail, professionalism, customer service skills, and ability to deliver confidential and respectful feedback to peers.

  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with student organizations, staff, faculty, and students, as well as independently.

  • Ability to prioritize work and balance between ongoing responsibilities and special assignments, providing follow-up on progress.

  • Must be a reliable, positive, team player who is passionate about assisting others and serving the Macalester community.

  • Comfort with computer software including spreadsheets and online databases. 

  • Interested individuals are encouraged to possess a strong understanding of Career Exploration services and resources.

Skills that may be acquired or developed on the job:

  • Effective job seeking skills, including how to create a solid resume and cover letter, network, search for relevant jobs and internships, utilize alumni resources, etc.

  • Event organization experience

  • Essential career readiness skills and confidence

  • Public speaking skills

Note: Preference for rising juniors or seniors with a strong understanding of the Macalester community. Rising sophomores with strong experience considered. Please apply by Sunday, April 19 for primary consideration.

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
