Job Description

The Open Pantry Operations Associate focus on supporting the day-to-day operations of Open Pantry within the Campus Center and making recommendations for long-term planning. Open Pantry is available for any Macalester student experiencing food insecurity to use to help support themselves. This team will be essential in helping Open Pantry meet its goals of providing for students experiencing food insecurity or inaccessibility, creating a warm and welcoming environment, and working with campus partners to help eliminate food pantry stigma that exists on all campuses.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Day-today staffing and management of Open Pantry
    • Follow open and closing procedures for all shifts 
    • Process online orders placed before and during shifts using e-commerce platforms (prints packing slips, fulfills/bags orders, completes online fulfillment process which lets users know their order is ready for pickup)
    • Moves any necessary stock from back stock to front stock prior to open hours and updates online inventory counts with strong attention to detail 
    • Greets patrons during open hours and ensures that each user fills out an intake form every visit
    • Intake forms are anonymous and are required to keep track of reporting statistics for partner agencies and to understand who the pantry is serving and how much food is being distributed 
    • Assists with processing incoming purchase orders from vendors (food, personal care items, etc.) and moving items from boxes to storage 
    • Using an online tool ensures items that are out of stock are updated on the website and in internal inventory views, and suggests for re-order if needed 
  • Pantry promotion and engagement
    • Create content with tools such as Canva, TikTok, IG Reels, etc. to help promote the pantry on social media - will work with Campus Center Promotions Coordinator to ensure posts go up. 
    • Content includes things such as how to use the pantry, what a typical visit looks like, staff introductions, etc. 
    • Coordinate with Campus Center Promotions assistant to create and publish materials such as posters, hours cards, 
    • Search and publish recipes related to pantry contents showing what meals and snacks can be created using the items available 
    • Publish on social media platforms, print materials, and create videos
    • Assist with creating and coordinating “Pantry to Plate” cooking courses with outside chefs and other campus partners 
    • Tabling for pantry to promote new products and increase awareness of goals and existence on campus 
  • Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Current Macalester student meeting Student Employment Eligibility criteria
  • Work-study required
  • Willing to complete Title IX student employee training, serve as a mandated reporter while on shift, and pass a Title IX Office check requested by staff that will inquire about the student's disciplinary history
  • Ability to work a minimum of 8 hours per week during the academic year
  • Work-study award splits are considered on a case-by-case basis. Due to the level of training that requires staff in Open Pantry to be successful on the job, students are not to split more than 30% of their work-study award with another department.
  • Physical demands may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving, and carrying items up to 50 pounds. Ability to use a step ladder.
  • Awareness and understanding of lived experiences, intersecting oppressions, and individual privilege

Expectations:

  • Previous experience or willingness to work in a team-focused atmosphere 
  • Strong time management, organizational, leadership, interpersonal communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Follows all guidelines for the procedure regarding best pantry practices (ensures all food items are within their allotted dates, shelves are clean and organized with all labels facing outwards, etc.)
  • Has a strong interest in food access in communities, eliminating food resources stigma, and community/relationship building
  • Attend scheduled shifts, staff meetings, and training retreats consistently and on-time
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively solve problems
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends 
  • Ensure all tasks and responsibilities are being taken care of before working on things such as homework or studying
  • Completes yearly Civil Rights and Food Safety training required by federal law
  • Respects the privacy of students using Open Pantry and understands sensitivity around food insecurity

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
