Job Description

Expectations

  • Previous experience or willingness to work in a team-focused atmosphere 

  • Strong time management, organizational, leadership, and communication skills

  • Attend scheduled shifts, staff meetings, and training retreats consistently and on-time

  • To work 2-4 mandatory event shifts per semester (IE, large scale events, moving patio furniture to/from storage seasonally, etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and initiative to solve problems independently

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends 

  • Ensure all tasks and responsibilities are taken care of before working on things such as homework or studying

  • Be self-motivated to take initiative, work independently and perform job duties with minimal supervision

  • Be comfortable communicating with other staff/departments, answers requests and phone calls, uses tablet to find setup reports, tasks, and complete rounds reports

Duties & Responsibilities

Campus Center Operations

  • Setup rooms for events in Campus Center and ensures all scheduled publicity reservations are being executed (sandwich boards, table tents, poster boards)

  • Assists and solves customer/patron problems with cordial attitude while remaining in-line with department and College policies

  • Be familiar with and enact building opening and closing procedures for the Campus Center

  • Operates with safety as a goal: Is alert to any unusual occurrences such as vandalism, theft, fire, illness, etc. Ensures that patrons are not participating in acts that could cause harm to self or others 

  • Execute emergency procedures when necessary

  • Completes basic cleaning and wipe down of equipment when necessary, ensures all equipment is properly stored and maintained, removes any unauthorized signage or posted materials.  Reports facility or equipment issues to supervisor or calls in immediate concerns to Public Safety or Facilities.

  • Conducts building rounds to ensure policies are being met by guests and filling out a shift report

  • Work towards developing confidence in working with technology and assisting clients with setup

  • Provides excellent customer service, especially during times of frustration

    Information Desk

  • Responds to campus-wide information needs with quality customer service.

  • Responsibly handles cash and credit card transactions while working at the Information Desk.

  • Maintains department inventory (Metro Transit products, movie tickets, etc.)

  • Greeting and assisting members of the Macalester community and guests.

  • Completes projects as assigned.

Job Requirements

 

  • Work-study required

  • Willing to complete Title IX student employee training, serve as a mandated reporter while on shift, and pass a Title IX check that will inquire about the student’s disciplinary history.

  • Ability to work a minimum of 8 hours per week during the academic year

  • Work-study award splits are considered on a case-by-case basis, but are generally not approved in the first year of employment.

  • Physical demands may require walking or standing for extended periods of time and may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and carrying items up to 50 lbs. (unassisted) and 75 lbs. (with assistance)

  • Awareness and understanding of lived experiences, intersecting oppressions and individual privilege

Sick and Safe Time

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
