Job Description

The Communications and Marketing department is seeking a web assistant for the 2025-26 academic year. This position will focus on implementing principles of web accessibility.

Must be financial aid/work-study eligible. This position reports to Cassie Froese in the Communications and Marketing department.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Improve accessibility across the Macalester website, such as writing transcripts for videos and writing alt text. As accessibility is closely tied to search engine optimization (SEO), SEO tasks may also be a part of this role.
  2. Support ongoing web audits of high-traffic pages and complete other content management tasks.
  3. Assist digital team with refreshing content on academic department websites, such as adding or updating alt text for images and revising link text.
  4. Work on site update requests for campus partners and assist with updating community-facing digital platforms. 
  5. Willingness to perform other web tasks as assigned.

Skills Acquired or Developed on the Job:

  1. Learn and practice applying the fundamentals of digital accessibility
  2. Develop experience with WordPress and web quality assurance software. (WordPress editor training will be provided.)
  3. General professional experience, including skills in technology support, organization, and communication

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications of Specific Skills Necessary to Perform the Duties:

  1. Work study is required for this position
  2. Strong computer skills and access to a computer 
  3. Demonstrated interest in maintaining and improving websites and other digital content
  4. Openness to learning about and implementing accessibility principles
  5. Able to balance a variety of tasks, work independently, and attend to details
  6. Must uphold integrity of the office’s commitment to confidentiality

Schedule:

This position offers flexibility to complete work remotely and on a flexible schedule; however, some tasks will be time-sensitive and come with a deadline. The digital assistant will also check in with their supervisor regularly and have the opportunity to attend monthly professional development lunches with the Communications and Marketing student worker team.

  • Student employees accrue sick and safe time at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours paid. 
  • Sick and safe time is not paid out upon departure.
