Science tutors assist students enrolled in 100-level science courses, and must be comfortable tutoring for CHEM 111/112 - General Chemistry I and II. They participate in two to three SciQ tutor meetings each month and complete the tutor training program. Science tutors work with students one-to-one or in groups. Tutor training and practice will enhance the tutor’s communication skills and their critical thinking skills in science specific disciplines. SciQ Center Science tutors are present for in-person work shifts throughout the week during the SciQ Center's operating hours of Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sunday - Thursday evenings, 7 - 10 p.m. Tutors set their own schedule during these times, working with the other tutors to make a balanced schedule each semester. Tutors must work at least one evening shift during the week. Shifts typically last two to three hours each, totaling no more than nine hours per week and with a minimum of 4 hours/week. Two to three hours per month of paid work time is reserved for our tutor meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from noon-1 pm (with some adjustments for college breaks), during which we discuss various aspects of the job and conduct professional development. Regular attendance at these meetings is mandatory, along with attendance at the beginning-of-year tutor orientation on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Many of our tutors split their awards, working some hours for another department as long as they are able to dedicate adequate time to the Science Tutor position.
Please note: With equal qualifications, students with work study will be prioritized. By applying to work as a SciQ Science tutor, the applicant is aware that the SciQ Center will contact the Title IX and Nondiscrimination Office to inquire about their disciplinary status with the college. Current or past policy violations do not automatically disqualify or exclude the applicant from this selection process; however, they may be taken into consideration. If you have questions on this process, please contact the Title IX Office at titleixcoordinator@macalester.edu. |
